Empty Tupperware

It’s my early prep time at work, so I head to the lunchroom to get some paperwork done. When I pass through the door the sight on the table stops me cold.

A blue container with a sticky note on the lid.

Usually people bring their lunches and breakfasts to the lunchroom in various containers and there’s nothing much to note except the odd things they get like pink bags with pictures of cats on it.

But an open container plastic container in the middle of the room where no one hardly sits is the hint of an invitation. It means that somebody on staff had a little extra time the other day. It means that somebody on staff made a little something for us to eat.

It means that somebody on staff loves us.

I hurry over to the container and read the note: Raspberry Cheesecake Muffin. I can taste it.

I can still taste it. Nothing but air.

Early as I am, I am still too late. I walk away.

Felix wait, someone tells me, there’s a large crumb left in the box.

And so there is.

It is the most delicious crumb I have ever had in my life.
