I stopped by my parents’ house the other day
And I was lucky. Mom was awake. The niece and nephew were home. The only thing that could have made it a complete family reunion (my immediate family, that is) would have been if my little brother wasn’t working.
What was really neat was that Mom had just woken up.
She spoke to me.
She spoke, and I think it was the most she had ever said to me in a really long time. She asked me where my wife was. She asked me about work, and about school. She said she wanted to read books again and read books by Wouk and romances and suspense novels.
She told me she didn’t know what was going on in the Filipino movie that she was watching because she had just woken up and she had just started watching it in the middle.
I didn’t want to leave. My mom spoke to me.
For the first time in a long time it seemed as if a quiet room in my head had suddenly filled with comforting voices.
