When the going gets tough, the tough go gaming.

Of course there’s always work to do, and the more of it you do the more of it you generate somewhere else along the line.

So if I grade these 30 papers that means the class progresses to generate 30 more papers sooner. If it’s five classes with 30 papers each, that’s 150 papers generating 150 more. It’s like a population explosion except with student homework assignments in place of hungry mouths.

Sometimes you just happen to piss people off

Or at least I do.

I have papers I haven’t graded. I have lessons I haven’t planned. I have a set of difficult reference questions to answer, a paper to write, and a long list of chores to do that I haven’t done. So what do I do as I settle into the closet office on the fourth floor?

I tip over my department head’s coffee onto her papers.

So. Perhaps my final blog?

I am so awake right now.

Being awake at 7:55 AM means that I’ll be tired by 10.

Caffeine is so bad for me.

That’s nobody’s business but the Turks

My co-worker D– was organizing a departmental social at a Turkish food and music extravaganza, and she sent out an email to all members of our department and members of our ancillary department (ie, people we like).

When I saw her, she stopped me and said “Felix, YOU haven’t responded.”

I stopped by my parents’ house the other day

And I was lucky. Mom was awake. The niece and nephew were home. The only thing that could have made it a complete family reunion (my immediate family, that is) would have been if my little brother wasn’t working.

What was really neat was that Mom had just woken up.

“Let’s not go to Camelot…

…it’s a silly place, anyway.”

Here we go again. I had kicked the habit sometime last year and only maintained it for the sake of my older brother’s subscriptions, but I turned it on one night.

And I stayed. For hours.

My other tie

“Don’t you ever wear something other than a black tie?” my students asked.

“Why sure,” I told them, “I do, in fact, have one other tie that I’ll wear to work.”

Just one more reason to hate the snow

I came home today and made an effort to shovel before leaving the house to pick up my wife. The snow wasn’t difficult to lift and toss, since it was all powder and I don’t think I touched any kind of ice with my shovel.

Blogorrhea

As if I don’t have enough to do on my to-do list (which includes creating a to-do list), I’ve decided that the stoppage must end. It’s time to fiber things up and loosen the words like…well, you get the idea.

I have a “free” period later today when I might be able to slip in an entry or two. Also, after work, I have to disallow myself from thinking entertaining thoughts or completing personally amusing activities.

So resolution:

Before I have fun, either with myself and others, write something down because that’s fun, too.

The house is out to get me

Yesterday I tried to leave the house to pick my wife up at work. Now the smart thing to do would have been to leave early and have time for unexpected delays, and since I’m a smart man I left earlier than late. I was levelling in *insert video game babble here* and when I looked up it was time to go. And if I hurried, I’d even get there on time!

So I threw on my coat and shoes, and pulled on the door to get out.

It stuck.
