This place looks familiar

For the past few years, our school has traveled to my former high school for professional development activities. It’s fun, and there’s free food, but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s an odd thing to be wandering the halls of your high school as an adult. It’s almost as if I never left the place.

But shouldn’t that be the case all the time? I may work in a different high school, but it’s still a high school. And even though I’m not the one dodging security guards anymore (well, maybe sometimes I am dodging security, like when I need a place to nap or when they mistake me for a student) the building wraps itself around you in very different ways.

I don’t know if that’s good or bad. I’m still teaching, so I must be doing something right.
