Books for MMORPG Players

A list of books for the online gamer by Felix Flauta.

Origins

I created the site for my book referral web project. The object of the project was to find a genre, author or specific topic, and create a website that tried to reach a specific teen audience. I chose gamers because I've always talked to other gamers about books they've liked, and because books provide so much more depth to science fiction and fantasy than just "kill 50 rabbits."

It has also become apparent from playing so many games that well written games are often influenced by good literature. So the names and characters in a kingdom might be based on Celtic mythology, for example.

Characters

I organized the site around the concept of characters to make it consistent with the things a player would be interested in. Characters and their roles. When a new MMORPG is announced, often players want to know what the characters will be.

Really, I think, they are asking "What does the game allow me to do?" and "Do I even want to do that?"

So visitors to the site can view characters according to their character class and realize that Nausicaa is the only protector (a good healer is ALWAYS hard to find) which just tells me that writers and readers both don't expect priests and individuals who make others stronger to be at the forefront of fantasy fiction.

Layout and Design

I used Dreamweaver to create my site. I was tempted to use a Wordpress blog to make creating entries and filing easier, but I couldn't find one I liked the look of and I haven't yet learned how to manipulate or create Wordpress templates.

I did borrow the background image and the red banner at the top from the World of Warcraft page, but shhh....

If all goes well, I will maintain the site and start by adding the following characters

    • Taran from The Book of Three of The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.
